QADIYA is an independent, noncommercial community project: an archive of Palestine’s history, built for the cause and open to everyone.
This is an early pilot. Its records were gathered with AI help from cited sources and are still being checked, so don’t rely on them yet, and tell us if something is wrong.
We’re looking for people and organisations to build it with us: historians, archivists, translators, designers, developers, and partners who can support the work.
On 29 October 1948, during Operation Yoav, Israeli forces entered al-Dawayima, west of Hebron, and killed its people in their homes, in the village mosque and in a nearby cave. The dead are estimated in the hundreds.
Al-Dawayima, 24 kilometres from Hebron, had 3,710 people in 1945. On 29 October 1948, during Operation Yoav, the 89th commando battalion of the Israeli army’s 8th Armored Brigade entered the village and killed its people in three stages: in their homes and alleyways, in the village mosque, and in a cave at Tor al-Zagh.
The exact number of victims is unknown. The Egyptian command in Bethlehem reported 500; the American consul in Jerusalem wrote of between 500 and 1,000; the village’s mukhtar documented 455 by name; David Ben-Gurion wrote of 70 to 80. The survivors dispersed to refugee camps in Jericho, Hebron and Jordan, and in 1955 the settlement of Amatzya was built on part of the village’s rubble.
