Yasser Arafat

1929–2004
Born Muhammad Abd al-Ra’uf al-Qudwa al-Husseini in Cairo on 24 August 1929, he founded Fatah with Khalil al-Wazir and others, was elected chairman of the PLO Executive Committee in February 1969, and addressed the UN General Assembly on 13 November 1974. He returned to the Gaza Strip on 1 July 1994, shared the Nobel Peace Prize that December, and was elected president of the Palestinian Authority in January 1996. Israeli forces besieged his headquarters in Ramallah from December 2001. He died in Clamart, France, on 11 November 2004.

Yasser Arafat, besieged in his Ramallah headquarters, fell ill in October 2004 and was flown to a military hospital near Paris, where his death was announced on 11 November 2004. He was buried at the muqata’a in Ramallah.
On 13 November 1974 Yasser Arafat, chairman of the PLO, addressed the UN General Assembly on the question of Palestine, ending: “Today I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom-fighter’s gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand.”
