Born in Gaza in 1950, he studied law in Beirut, worked with the PLO in Tunisia and moved to Cairo in 1991. He won the Palestine Prize for Poetry in 1997 for his prose poems, was Arab writer in residence at Oxford in 1998–99, and published three collections of poetry, among them Present Verbs (1986).
