Tawfiq Canaan

1882–1964

Born in Beit Jala on 24 September 1882, the son of the first Arab pastor of the Arab Lutheran Church, he graduated as a doctor in Beirut in 1905 and worked in Jerusalem’s hospitals, among them as head of the leper hospital and chief of internal medicine at the German Hospital. He collected amulets from 1905 and published some forty-five articles on folklore, folk medicine and popular belief, a pioneer in studying the Palestinians’ folklore and ethnography as those of one nation; he was president of the Palestine Oriental Society from 1927. The British imprisoned him in Acre for nine weeks in 1939. He died in Jerusalem on 15 January 1964.
