Born in Jerusalem in 1963, he played clarinet and nay and co-founded the group Sabreen in 1980. He co-founded the Popular Art Centre in al-Bireh in 1987, was jailed by Israel for six months in 1988 for producing a tape of music, and was artistic director of the El-Funoun dance troupe from 1989 to 1993. He co-founded the National Conservatory of Music in 1993, now the Edward Said National Conservatory, and has directed it since 1996.
