Shafiq al-Hout

Born in Jaffa on 13 January 1932, he and his classmates, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod among them, formed a Palestinian student union; on 24 April 1948 his family was forced to leave for Lebanon by sea. A journalist and writer, he took part in founding and leading the PLO, directed its first bureau in an Arab country, in Lebanon, and was the spokesman of its delegation when Yasser Arafat addressed the UN General Assembly in November 1974. Elected to the PLO’s Executive Committee in 1991, he resigned from it in protest at the Oslo Accords of September 1993. He died in Beirut on 2 August 2009.

On 13 November 1974 Yasser Arafat, chairman of the PLO, addressed the UN General Assembly on the question of Palestine, ending: “Today I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom-fighter’s gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand.”
