Born in Daliyat al-Karmel on 3 July 1949 to a Druze family, he studied philosophy at Haifa University. A writer and playwright, he was cultural editor of the Arabic magazine al-Jadid, directed the Emil Touma Institute for Palestinian and Israeli Studies in Haifa and edited Madar, the journal of the Palestinian Forum for Israeli Studies in Ramallah. He wrote more than twenty-five books, among them We Did Not Forget the Old Man’s Story (1983), and translated Hebrew literature into Arabic.
