Born in Bethlehem on 21 March 1950, she earned a doctorate in clinical pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1977, and returned to teach biology at Birzeit University. She founded the university’s Community Health Department and has directed it since 1988, was a founder of its women’s studies programme in 1993, and has written widely on health in the occupied territories.
