Rawya al-Shawa

1948–2017
Born in Gaza in 1948, she studied literature at the American University in Cairo and worked as a journalist and columnist. In 1992 she founded the Gaza Cultural and Development Group; she was elected to the Legislative Council for Gaza City as an independent in 1996, and again in 2006, and chaired the board of the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees. She died in 2017.

On 25 January 2006 Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip elected their Legislative Council, and Hamas’s Change and Reform list won 74 of its 132 seats. Israel and the Quartet refused to deal with the government Hamas formed, and the rift that followed divided Gaza from the West Bank.
