An American political scientist and United Nations official, born in Detroit on 7 August 1904. He replaced Count Folke Bernadotte as the UN’s mediator for Palestine after Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem on 17 September 1948, and when the fighting ended gathered the delegations of the warring sides on the island of Rhodes, arranging the armistice agreements from February to July 1949. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950 for his work as mediator in Palestine, and died in New York on 9 December 1971.

The first armistice agreement is signed at Rhodes

On 24 February 1949, on the island of Rhodes, Egypt and Israel signed a General Armistice Agreement under United Nations chairmanship, in force from its signature: the first of the armistices that Israel concluded by July with Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. They ended the bloodshed of the 1948 war; no peace treaty followed.
