QADIYA is an independent, noncommercial community project: an archive of Palestine’s history, built for the cause and open to everyone.
This is an early pilot. Its records were gathered with AI help from cited sources and are still being checked, so don’t rely on them yet, and tell us if something is wrong.
We’re looking for people and organisations to build it with us: historians, archivists, translators, designers, developers, and partners who can support the work.
Born in Jerusalem’s Old City in 1945, he created a new kind of Palestinian song after the occupation of 1967, setting the poems of major Palestinian poets to music drawn from the Old City: the oud, Sufi chants, Byzantine song and folk song. Placed under administrative arrest in 1976, he spent nine years in exile, studying composition in Göttingen and ethnomusicology in Berlin, and returned in 1985. The music department he founded at al-Hakawati in 1986 became the Jerusalem Center for Arabic Music in 1991, which he heads.
