Born in al-Bi‘na in the Galilee in 1953, he studied acting and theatre at Tel Aviv University and worked in film and theatre, in films by Costa-Gavras, Michel Khleifi and Rashid Masharawi among others. He wrote, co-produced and directed Jenin, Jenin (2002), on the Israeli army’s invasion of the Jenin refugee camp in April 2002; banned at first in Israel, it won the best film prize at the Carthage festival that year.

From 3 April 2002, in Operation Defensive Shield, Israeli forces entered Jenin and its refugee camp. By the withdrawal on 18 April, the UN Secretary-General reported, at least 52 Palestinians, up to half of them possibly civilians, and 23 Israeli soldiers were dead, about 150 buildings destroyed, and 450 families homeless.
