Born in Nazareth on 11 February 1886 to a Lebanese father, a schoolteacher, and a Palestinian mother, she studied with the Sisters of St Joseph in Nazareth and at Aintoura in Lebanon, where she wrote her first poems. In 1907 her family moved to Cairo, where she joined the pioneers of the nahda, the Arab cultural renaissance. She died in Cairo on 19 October 1941.
