Born in Kobar near Ramallah on 6 June 1959, he joined Fateh at fifteen, spent four and a half years in Israeli prisons from 1978, and led the student council at Birzeit University. Deported to Jordan in 1987, he helped organise the first Intifada from exile, returned in 1994 and won a seat in the Legislative Council in 1996. He became the main local leader of the second Intifada; arrested by the Israeli army in Ramallah on 15 April 2002, he was sentenced in 2004 to five life terms and forty years, and in 2006 was elected to the Legislative Council, first on the Fateh list, while in prison.
