Khalil al-Wazir

خليل الوزير

1935–1988

Born in Ramla on 10 October 1935, he left with his family after the town was occupied in 1948 and settled in Gaza, where in 1955 he helped lead a mass demonstration against Israeli killings and resettlement schemes. He met Yasser Arafat at a training camp in Egypt, sat on Fatah’s first Central Committee from 1959 until his death, and took charge of its contacts with the guerrilla cells inside Palestine. One of the principal architects of the First Intifada, he was assassinated at Sidi Bou Said, in Tunisia, on 16 April 1988.
