Kamal Nasser

1925–1973

Born in Gaza City in 1924 or 1925, where his father was then working, into a well-known Protestant family of Birzeit, he studied political science at the American University of Beirut and taught Arabic literature at al-Ahliyya College in Ramallah from 1947. A poet and journalist, he edited the weekly al-Jil al-Jadid in Jerusalem; the Israeli authorities expelled him to Jordan in December 1967. Elected to the PLO’s Executive Committee in February 1969, he became its official spokesman and edited Filastin al-Thawra. Israeli agents assassinated him in Beirut’s Verdun quarter on 10 April 1973, with Kamal Adwan and Muhammad Youssef al-Najjar.
