Ismail Haniyeh

Born in al-Shati’ (Beach) refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in 1962 or 1963, to a family driven out in the Nakba from al-Jura near Asqalan, he studied in UNRWA’s schools and Arabic literature at the Islamic University of Gaza. He joined Hamas at its founding in late 1987, was imprisoned by Israel several times, and was deported to south Lebanon in December 1992. He led Hamas’s Change and Reform list in the legislative elections of January 2006, headed Palestinian governments, among them the national unity government formed in March 2007, and in May 2017 was elected head of the movement’s political bureau. He was assassinated in Tehran on 31 July 2024.

On 25 January 2006 Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip elected their Legislative Council, and Hamas’s Change and Reform list won 74 of its 132 seats. Israel and the Quartet refused to deal with the government Hamas formed, and the rift that followed divided Gaza from the West Bank.
