Born in Kobar near Ramallah in 1954, he studied Hungarian and economics in Budapest and earned a doctorate in comparative literature at the University of Washington, then taught at Birzeit and al-Quds universities and sat on the board of the Palestinian Writers’ Union. A prolific writer of prose, poetry, song lyrics and plays, he wrote The Rosetta Stone (2002) and The Priest (2003). He died on 1 May 2002.
