Hind al-Husseini

1916–1994

Born in Jerusalem on 25 April 1916, she taught at the Islamic Girls’ School and in 1948 helped found the Social Cooperation Society for Women, which grew to twenty-two branches. In April 1948 she found children wandering in Jerusalem’s Old City who had fled the massacre at Deir Yassin, and for them and other orphans founded Dar al-Tifl al-Arabi (the Home of the Arab Child). In 1960 she opened a museum of Palestinian popular culture within it, and in 1982 founded the Hind al-Husseini College of Arts for Girls. She died in Jerusalem on 13 September 1994.
