Born in Nazareth in 1961, he studied aviation engineering in the Netherlands, where he began working as an assistant filmmaker, and with Rashid Masharawi founded the Aylul film production company. His films include Ford Transit and Rana’s Wedding (both 2002) and Paradise Now, which received three prizes at the Berlin festival in 2005, among them the Blue Angel for the best European film, and was nominated for the Oscar for the best foreign-language film in 2006.
