QADIYA is an independent, noncommercial community project: an archive of Palestine’s history, built for the cause and open to everyone.
This is an early pilot. Its records were gathered with AI help from cited sources and are still being checked, so don’t rely on them yet, and tell us if something is wrong.
We’re looking for people and organisations to build it with us: historians, archivists, translators, designers, developers, and partners who can support the work.
Person · Mufti of Jerusalem from 1921; president of the Arab Higher Committee from 1936
Hajj Amin al-Husseini
الحاج أمين الحسيني
1895–1974
Muhammad Amin al-Husseini was born in Jerusalem in 1895. He succeeded his brother Kamel as Mufti of Jerusalem in May 1921, and in January 1922 became president of the Supreme Moslem Council. In April 1936, after some hesitation, he presided over the Arab Higher Committee, which brought together the leaders of all the Palestinian parties and led the general strike of 1936 and the Great Revolt that followed. After rebels assassinated Lewis Andrews, the British district commissioner for Galilee, in September 1937, Britain dismissed him from the Supreme Moslem Council and moved to arrest the Arab Higher Committee; he took refuge in the Noble Sanctuary, then fled to Lebanon. From 1946 to 1948 he led the Palestinian national movement from Cairo, Beirut and Damascus. He died in Beirut on 4 July 1974.
