1925–2008

Born in Lydda on 1 August 1925 to an Orthodox Christian family, he cut short his medical studies at the American University of Beirut in June 1948 to assist a surgeon at a clinic in Lydda; when the town fell in July he and his family were among its inhabitants expelled under gunfire. He graduated as a doctor in 1951, led the Arab Nationalist Movement, and in December 1967 founded the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He died in Amman on 26 January 2008.

Between 9 and 13 July 1948 Israeli forces took Lydda in Operation Dani. More than four hundred people were killed in the city, among them those sheltering in the Dahmash mosque, and some 70,000 people of Lydda and the surrounding towns were driven out on foot toward Ramallah.
