Faisal al-Husseini

1940–2001

Born in Baghdad on 17 July 1940, the son of Abd al-Qadir al-Husseini, he met Yasser Arafat in 1959 and ran the PLO’s popular organisation department in Jerusalem from 1964. He co-founded the Arab Studies Society in 1980 and in 1987 set up the Palestinian Human Rights Center and the Committee Against the Iron Fist; he was among the most prominent leaders of the First Intifada, and was detained repeatedly. In 1991 he held talks with the US Secretary of State James Baker to prepare the Madrid conference; he later took charge of Jerusalem affairs for the PLO and was elected to its Executive Committee. He died in Kuwait on 31 May 2001.

The Madrid peace conference

On 30 October 1991 a peace conference opened in Madrid under American and Soviet sponsorship. Palestinians took part within a joint Jordanian-Palestinian delegation, their side headed by Haydar Abd al-Shafi; talks followed on a Palestinian-Israeli and a Jordanian-Israeli track.
