Born in Fassuta in the Galilee in 1950, he studied English and Arabic literature and art history at the Hebrew University, edited the Arabic literary monthly al-Sharq from 1970 to 1975 and produced Arabic programmes for television. In 1987 he moved to the United States, where he taught English, Near Eastern studies and comparative literature at the University of Michigan. A poet, essayist, playwright and translator, he wrote the novel Arabesques (1986).
