Zajal

الزجل

Colloquial poetry, often improvised, recited before an audience. After the Nakba, the zajal of poets such as Youssef al-Hassoun, Abu Sa‘id al-Hittini and Mohammad Abu al-Su‘oud al-Assadi spread throughout Palestine and, being oral, escaped Israeli military censorship, helping to keep Arab identity alive; later zajal poets such as Abu Arab and Rajeh al-Salfiti kept the cause alive at political, social and cultural gatherings.
