The taqiyya, a woman’s headdress

الطاقية

A small square cap fitted to the head, often embroidered in silk with fringes hanging at its sides and sewn with silver and gold coins that were a married woman’s dowry, worn on her head. Women wore it across Palestine under Ottoman and British rule until the mid-twentieth century; its shape and name changed with the region: wiqa, ‘iraqiyya, saffa, shatwa, samada.
