Arabic kohl

الكحل العربي

Kohl, a fine black powder worn as eyeliner, for beauty and for protection, made from natural ingredients that differ with the place; mostly women make it, and pass the knowledge to their daughters and granddaughters. It is a craft and a social practice of Bedouin and nomadic, rural, marshland and fishing communities in the Arab region, and also a remedy. UNESCO inscribed it in 2025 on the joint nomination of nine Arab states, the State of Palestine among them.
