On 8 February 2005, at a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh convened by Egypt’s president, Mahmoud Abbas and Ariel Sharon announced that Palestinians would stop all acts of violence against Israelis and that Israel would cease all its military activities against Palestinians. The encyclopedia of the Institute for Palestine Studies takes this ceasefire as the end of the Second Intifada.

The summit

The Security Council welcomed the summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on 8 February 2005, and the understandings Israel and the Palestinian Authority reached there: that Palestinians would stop all acts of violence against Israelis, and that Israel would cease all its military activities against Palestinians. The same day, the Secretary-General welcomed the two leaders’ “joint announcements to cease violence after four years of death and suffering”, and commended Egypt’s president for organising the summit.

The end of the intifada

The encyclopedia of the Institute for Palestine Studies (Roger Heacock) writes that relations with Israel were stabilised through this ceasefire, which can be considered the end of the al-Aqsa Intifada.
