Six days

On the morning of 5 June 1967 Israel launched a surprise attack on Egypt’s airfields, nearly destroying its air force. In six days it defeated the armies of Egypt, Syria and Jordan, and occupied Sinai, the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Battles in the West Bank displaced much of its population, especially from the refugee camps of the Jordan Valley; Palestinians in the Gaza Strip tried to flee toward the West Bank and on to Jordan.

The occupation

All that remained of historic Palestine came under Israeli military rule. Israel annexed East Jerusalem and began, in the first days of the occupation, to build Jewish settlements there and in the Golan Heights. The defeat of the Arab armies brought a surge of fedayeen operations and the passing of the PLO’s leadership to the armed Palestinian groups; the Arab world came to call the war al-naksa, the setback.
