Ghassan Kanafani is assassinated

On 8 July 1972 the Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani, spokesman of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was killed in Beirut by a bomb in his car. His seventeen-year-old niece, Lamis, was killed with him. The Institute for Palestine Studies’ biography states that the Israeli Mossad had placed the charge.

The writer

Kanafani was born in Acre in 1936. In 1948, when he was twelve, his family were forced to leave Jaffa and took refuge in Lebanon. He wrote short stories, novels and plays, among them Men in the Sun (1963) and Returning to Haifa (1969). He was the spokesman of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and, from 1969, the editor of its magazine, al-Hadaf.

The killing

On 8 July 1972 a bomb in Kanafani’s car exploded in Beirut, killing him and his niece. Al Jazeera reports that a grenade had been connected to the ignition, which set off a plastic bomb planted behind the bumper when he started the car. The Institute for Palestine Studies’ biography states that the Israeli Mossad had placed the charge.
