QADIYA is an independent, noncommercial community project: an archive of Palestine’s history, built for the cause and open to everyone.
This is an early pilot. Its records were gathered with AI help from cited sources and are still being checked, so don’t rely on them yet, and tell us if something is wrong.
We’re looking for people and organisations to build it with us: historians, archivists, translators, designers, developers, and partners who can support the work.
On 7 October 2023 Palestinian armed groups from Gaza attacked Israeli towns and military sites near the Strip, killing and capturing soldiers and civilians, and Israel began striking Gaza that morning: the start of a war on the Strip whose toll the UN has reported ever since. In South Africa’s case under the Genocide Convention, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel in January 2024 to take all measures within its power to prevent acts within the scope of the Convention’s Article II.
Early on 7 October 2023, Palestinian armed groups in Gaza fired thousands of rockets toward Israel and broke through the perimeter fence at several points, entering Israeli towns, communities and military facilities near the Strip, killing and capturing Israeli forces and civilians and taking them into Gaza. At around 10:45 that morning Israeli forces began striking targets in the Gaza Strip.

On 29 December 2023 South Africa instituted proceedings against Israel under the Genocide Convention. On 26 January 2024 the Court ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of acts within the scope of Article II of the Convention; on 28 March 2024 it ordered Israel to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance; and on 24 May 2024 to halt its military offensive in Rafah.
The UN’s humanitarian office publishes a running account of the reported impact, with casualty figures from the Ministry of Health in Gaza and from the Israeli authorities. The breakdowns it cites are of the fatalities the Ministry had fully identified by 31 December 2025, out of the higher number it reports.
