QADIYA is an independent, noncommercial community project: an archive of Palestine’s history, built for the cause and open to everyone.
This is an early pilot. Its records were gathered with AI help from cited sources and are still being checked, so don’t rely on them yet, and tell us if something is wrong.
We’re looking for people and organisations to build it with us: historians, archivists, translators, designers, developers, and partners who can support the work.
After weeks of confrontation in Jerusalem, over al-Aqsa Mosque and the threatened eviction of families in Sheikh Jarrah, fighting broke out between Israel and the armed factions in Gaza on 10 May 2021. In eleven days, the Gaza Health Ministry reported, 248 people were killed in Gaza, among them 66 children; eleven Israeli civilians and one soldier were reported killed.
In late April and early May 2021, Israeli police actions against worshippers at al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan and renewed threats to evict Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, in East Jerusalem, came together with the Palestinian Authority’s decision of 29 April to postpone the Legislative Council elections. On 10 May, the last day of Ramadan, as right-wing Israelis marked Israel’s 1967 occupation of East Jerusalem, clashes with the police on the Haram left dozens of Palestinians injured. Hamas gave Israel until 6 p.m. to withdraw its troops, police and settlers from the compound and from Sheikh Jarrah; when the deadline passed, the factions in Gaza fired rockets into Israel, and that evening Israel began striking the Gaza Strip.
For eleven days Israeli air strikes met rocket fire from Gaza. Israel brought down high-rise buildings in Gaza City, among them, on 15 May, the al-Jalaa building, which housed the Associated Press and Al Jazeera; a strike on the al-Rimal neighbourhood on 16 May killed 42 civilians. Israel’s mixed cities saw unprecedented protests by its Palestinian citizens. The fighting ended with a ceasefire on 21 May, brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the UN.
