The blockade

In June 2007, following Hamas’s military takeover of Gaza, the Israeli authorities significantly intensified movement restrictions that already existed, citing security. The UN’s humanitarian office describes a land, sea and air blockade limiting the number and kinds of people and goods allowed in and out through the Israeli-controlled crossings. Egypt closed its Rafah crossing with Gaza for long periods after 2014.

Fifteen years on

In June 2022 the office reported that 1.3 million of Gaza’s 2.1 million people needed food assistance, and that unemployment stood at 46.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2022, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
